Prerequisites
- A live site already earning, or close to it
- Analytics you can check monthly sessions and revenue in
The standard advice runs: start on AdSense, move to Ezoic at around 10,000 pageviews, graduate to Mediavine at 50,000 sessions.
Every number in that sentence is now wrong. Both networks restructured their entry requirements, and the ladder people describe no longer exists in that shape.
⚠️ Warning
This is a topic where stale advice is genuinely costly. Publishers grind toward a 50,000-session target believing it unlocks Mediavine, or apply to Ezoic expecting a low bar and get rejected. Check the live requirements pages before planning around any figure — including the ones below, which were accurate when this guide was reviewed.
Where Each Network Actually Starts
| Network | Stated entry requirement |
|---|---|
| Google AdSense | No traffic minimum. Unique, high-quality original content, policy compliance, applicant aged 18+ |
| Journey by Mediavine | 1,000 sessions from Tier 1 countries in a 30-day period |
| Ezoic | 250,000+ monthly active users (or the Incubator Program) |
| Mediavine | $5,000+ in annual ad revenue |
Read that table twice, because the order is not what most guides describe.
Ezoic Is Now the Hardest Door, Not the Easiest
For years Ezoic was the network you joined before you were big enough for anything else. That has reversed.
Ezoic's current requirements page states sites need "250,000+ monthly active users" to join. That is a substantial site — well beyond the point where most publishers would have considered it a stepping stone.
Two important qualifications:
The Incubator Program exists for sites below that threshold, described as helping "growing sites scale toward full platform eligibility." It is an application, not an automatic tier.
Existing publishers are grandfathered. Anyone monetizing with Ezoic before 19 February 2026 keeps access regardless of current size — but only while the integration stays live. Ezoic states that removing it for more than 7 days voids grandfathered status, after which the 250k threshold applies.
⚠️ Warning
If you are a grandfathered Ezoic publisher below 250,000 users, that 7-day rule is the single most important sentence in their documentation. Pausing Ezoic to test another network for a fortnight could permanently cost you access you cannot re-earn.
Mediavine Now Measures Money, Not Traffic
Mediavine's main programme requires "$5,000 in annual ad revenue" — a revenue threshold, not a session count.
This is a meaningful shift in what's being measured. Sessions are a proxy for earnings; revenue is the thing itself. A site with modest traffic in a high-value niche can clear $5,000 a year while a larger site in a low-bid niche doesn't.
Alongside revenue, Mediavine asks for:
- "original, audience-first content"
- "clean, human, brand-safe traffic"
- Good standing with Google AdSense and AdExchange
- Reader experiences that support premium advertising
Journey by Mediavine is the growth tier, and here the bar is genuinely low: a minimum of 1,000 sessions from Tier 1 countries (US, Canada, UK, Australia) within 30 days.
ℹ️ Good to Know
Note what Journey measures — Tier 1 sessions specifically, not total sessions. A site with 20,000 monthly visitors who are almost all outside those four countries may not qualify, while a site with 1,500 mostly-American readers does. Advertiser demand, not raw traffic, is what these networks are actually buying.
AdSense Remains the Only One With No Traffic Bar
Google's eligibility requirements ask for unique, high-quality original content, policy compliance, and an applicant aged 18 or over. No session minimum, no revenue minimum, no site age.
That makes AdSense the realistic starting point for almost everyone — not because it pays best, but because it's the only door open at zero traffic.
What They All Want, Regardless of Size
The compliance requirements overlap heavily, which is the useful part: work done for one carries to the others.
Ezoic's stated policy requirements include no invalid clicks or encouragement to click, no copyrighted or counterfeit material, no gambling, no adult or dangerous content, no alcohol, tobacco or healthcare content, and no "automatically generated, copied, or thin affiliate content." Content must be "original, constructive, and enticing", in an AdSense-supported language, and you must be able to add JavaScript to your site.
Mediavine's phrasing differs but points the same way: original audience-first content, clean human traffic, good standing with Google.
💡 Pro Tip
Every one of those is something you should be doing for AdSense anyway. There is no separate "Ezoic strategy" or "Mediavine strategy" on the content side — there's publishing genuinely useful original work and keeping your traffic honest. The networks differ on scale, not on standards.
A Realistic Path
Given the actual thresholds:
- Start with AdSense. It's the only network with no traffic requirement, and good standing with Google is a stated prerequisite elsewhere.
- Target Journey by Mediavine early if your audience skews to Tier 1 countries. 1,000 Tier 1 sessions in 30 days is achievable for a young site, and it's a far lower bar than anything else here.
- Track annual ad revenue, not just sessions. Mediavine's main programme is gated on $5,000/year, so your reporting should tell you how close you are in money terms.
- Treat Ezoic as a large-site option now, or apply to the Incubator if you want in earlier.
- If you're already on Ezoic and under 250k users, don't remove the integration. Seven days is all it takes to lose grandfathered access.
✅ Action Step
Work out two numbers today: your Tier 1 sessions over the last 30 days, and your ad revenue over the last 12 months. Those two figures determine which doors are open to you right now — far more precisely than a pageview count does.
Where to Verify Any of This
Every threshold above was read from each network's own requirements page, linked below. These specific pages have changed materially, which is exactly why this guide exists — so confirm the current figures directly before making plans around them, rather than trusting any summary including this one.
Frequently Asked Questions
What are Ezoic's requirements?
Ezoic states sites need 250,000+ monthly active users to join. Smaller sites may apply to the Ezoic Incubator Program instead. Publishers who were monetizing with Ezoic before 19 February 2026 are grandfathered regardless of size, provided they keep the integration live — removing it for more than 7 days voids that status.
How many sessions do you need for Mediavine?
Mediavine's own requirements page now states a minimum of $5,000 in annual ad revenue for its main programme, rather than a session count. Journey by Mediavine, its growth tier, requires a minimum of 1,000 sessions from Tier 1 countries within a 30-day period.
Is Mediavine still 50,000 sessions?
That figure no longer appears on Mediavine's stated requirements, which are now framed around annual ad revenue for the main programme and Tier 1 sessions for Journey. Guides quoting 50,000 sessions are describing an older structure.
Do you need AdSense before Ezoic or Mediavine?
Not as a formal prerequisite, but both expect Google-standard compliance. Mediavine asks that you be in good standing with Google AdSense and AdExchange, and Ezoic requires compliance with Google policies including no invalid clicks and no thin affiliate or auto-generated content.
