Print-on-Demand Margins: Why Your Profit Is a Subtraction, Not a Percentage

Printful charges no commission — you pay the fulfilment cost and keep the difference. That sounds better than a percentage until you work out what's left after the marketplace takes its cut too.

Skill level:BeginnerSetup time:A weekend to launch a storeTime to first dollar:Days to weeks after listingEarnings potential:Whatever you price above fulfilment cost

Prerequisites

  • A design idea, or the ability to make one
  • A store or marketplace to sell through

Every other earning route on this site is priced as a percentage. Print-on-demand isn't, and that difference changes how you have to think about it.

Printful's formula, in its own words:

Your profit = Retail price − Printful cost

No commission. No revenue share. You set the retail price, the customer pays it, you pay Printful for production and fulfilment, and you keep the difference.

What That Actually Means

A percentage fee scales with your price. A subtraction does not.

Retail price Fulfilment cost Your profit Effective margin
$20 $12 $8 40%
$25 $12 $13 52%
$30 $12 $18 60%
$35 $12 $23 65.7%

The fulfilment cost is fixed, so every dollar you add to the price is a dollar of profit. Raising your price by 50% here nearly triples your profit per unit.

ℹ️ Good to Know

This inverts the usual advice. On percentage-fee platforms, pricing higher earns you proportionally more. On print-on-demand, pricing higher earns you disproportionately more, because the cost underneath doesn't move. Underpricing is far more punishing here than anywhere else covered on this site.

The fulfilment figures above are illustrative — Printful publishes real costs per product, and they vary by item, placement and region. Check its own pricing for the products you plan to sell.

No Upfront Cost, But a Paid Tier

Printful states there are no upfront costs and that you "only pay for fulfilment once your customer orders." That removes the inventory risk that makes traditional merchandise a gamble.

Two plans matter for most sellers:

Plan Cost Key benefit
Free $0/month Access to a large product catalogue, unlimited stores, 20% off sample orders
Growth $24.99/month Up to 33% off product pricing, 9% off product branding, 25% off samples

Printful states the Growth plan becomes free once annual sales reach $12,000.

💡 Pro Tip

The Growth plan is straightforward arithmetic. At $24.99 a month it needs to save you more than $24.99 in product costs. If your fulfilment spend is around $75 a month, a 33% discount saves roughly $25 — so that's approximately your break-even. Below it you are paying for a discount you aren't using.

What the Base Price Doesn't Include

Printful states the base product price covers the blank product, one print or embroidery design placement, and fulfilment.

Charged separately:

  • Shipping
  • Taxes
  • Additional print placements — a front and back design costs more than a front alone
  • Custom labels
  • Embroidery digitization

A design on both sides of a shirt is not the same cost as one side, and sellers who price from the base figure discover this after the first order.

The Fee You Still Pay — Just Not to Printful

Here is what the "no commission" framing hides. Printful doesn't take a percentage, but wherever you sell almost certainly does.

Take a $30 shirt with a $12 fulfilment cost:

Sales channel Channel fee Your profit
Your own store via Stripe 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.17 $16.83
Etsy 6.5% transaction = $1.95, plus $0.20 listing $15.85
eBay, standard category 12.7% = $3.81, plus $0.40 per order $13.79

Same product, same fulfilment cost, and $3 of difference per unit decided purely by where you list it. On eBay the fee takes nearly a quarter of your gross profit.

⚠️ Warning

This is the arithmetic print-on-demand guides skip. "Printful takes no commission" is true and close to meaningless on its own — your real margin is retail minus fulfilment minus whatever the sales channel charges. Model all three before deciding a product is viable.

Selling through your own Shopify store adds the subscription on top, plus the third-party transaction fee if you don't use Shopify Payments.

What Makes This Route Work

Price for the subtraction. Because the cost is fixed, the difference between a $20 and a $30 listing is not 50% more profit — it can be more than double. Competing on price is unusually costly here.

Design is the whole product. The blank shirt is identical to everyone else's. The only thing you actually sell is the artwork and who it appeals to.

Watch the extras. Second placements, labels and embroidery all move the cost base, and a design that looks good with three placements may not be sellable once priced.

Order samples. Both plans discount them for a reason. You cannot judge print quality from a mockup, and you are responsible for what arrives at a customer's door.

Tax applies. In the US, print-on-demand profit is self-employment income — self-employment tax alone is 15.3% of net earnings before income tax.

✅ Action Step

Before listing anything, write down three numbers: Printful's actual cost for that exact product and placement count, your intended retail price, and your sales channel's fee. If the remainder isn't worth the design time, no amount of marketing fixes it — and unlike a percentage business, you cannot grow your way out of a bad per-unit margin.

Where to Verify Any of This

Printful's pricing model and plan costs come from its own pricing page, and the marketplace fees from eBay's and Shopify's published schedules — all linked below. Product costs vary by item and region and change over time, so confirm the current figures for what you actually intend to sell.
